Thy Light Is Come

Isaiah 60 opens with a sunrise. “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.”

Verse 2 says darkness will cover the earth. Isaiah saw the Lord’s people as a lit place in that darkness, with other nations coming to their light (Isaiah 60:3).
1Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. 2For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
19The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. 20Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
What It Teaches
Notice where the light comes from. Zion shines because the glory of the Lord has risen on her. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness” (John 8:12).
In verses 19 and 20, Isaiah looks further ahead. A day will come when the sun and moon are not needed, because “the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light,” and the days of mourning will end. John saw that city in vision and wrote that “the Lamb is the light thereof” (Revelation 21:23).
In Isaiah 62:4, the Lord gives Zion new names. She will no longer be called Forsaken. She will be called Hephzi-bah, “for the Lord delighteth in thee.”
Our part is to reflect his light. The risen Savior told the Nephites to hold up their light, and he said he is the light they should hold up (3 Nephi 18:24). When we act the way he did, people around us can see him.
