The Old Testament is full of symbols that point to Jesus Christ. Nephi wrote that the law of Moses and everything God gave from the beginning were given to point people to him (2 Nephi 11:4).
8And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
What It Teaches
The Passover lamb had to be without blemish, and its blood on the doorposts saved Israel’s firstborn (Exodus 12:5–7; 12:13). Paul wrote, “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us” (1 Corinthians 5:7).
When fiery serpents bit the Israelites, Moses lifted a brass serpent on a pole, and whoever looked at it lived (Numbers 21:8–9). Jesus said, “Even so must the Son of man be lifted up” (John 3:14). Looking to him is how we live.
Water came out of a rock when Moses struck it (Exodus 17:6). Paul wrote, “and that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). Manna fell from heaven six days a week for forty years (Exodus 16:26; 16:35), and Jesus said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35).
Next year’s Come, Follow Me reading is the New Testament. There we will meet the same Savior in person, walking and teaching among the people who had waited for him.
