John told the people that someone was coming who would baptize them “with the Holy Ghost, and with fire” (Matthew 3:11).
2Read Together
John baptized with water. The baptism of fire is the gift of the Holy Ghost, given after baptism by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:17). Latter-day Saints receive it when they are confirmed.
Luke 3:16 · King James Version
16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
John 14:26 · King James Version
26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
3What It Teaches
Fire burns away what is impure, the way a refiner purifies silver. Nephi taught that after baptism comes a remission of sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost (2 Nephi 31:17). The Holy Ghost cleanses us as well as comforting us.
Jesus called the Holy Ghost the Comforter, who “shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance” (John 14:26). He helps us remember what we have learned when we need it.
Elder Gary E. Stevenson described how the Holy Ghost speaks.
“He can be our constant companion, but He speaks in subtle, quiet tones.”
Fire also gives light and warmth. Two disciples who walked with the risen Lord said afterward, “Did not our heart burn within us?” (Luke 24:32). That burning is one way the Spirit testifies.
4Talk About It
Jesus said the Holy Ghost would teach us and help us remember. When has the Spirit helped you remember something right when you needed it?
